Description
DBT was initially specified as a one-year compressive treatment for clients who meet criteria for BPD and/or related complex problems of emotion dysregulation. More recently, there are many reports of shorter durations (eg 6 months) of compressive DBT being provided to a range of clinical populations and also DBT skills group-only being provided rather than comprehensive DBT. Is there data to support this? Who may benefit? Is there a risk that shorter or non-comprehensive treatments may work for some clients but not for those with the significant high needs for whom the treatment was initially developed?
We’ll review the emerging evidence for shorter durations of comprehensive DBT and for group-only. We’ll suggest who shorter treatments are more likely to help and the possible indications, risks, and benefits of DBT skills group-only provision.
