Description
Details:
Over the past few decades, DBT has become the primary treatment for severe emotional regulation disorders. Numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness, particularly in reducing suicidal ideation, self-harm, and a wide range of other mental health issues.
There is now a veritable array of DBT modifications that specifically target particular problem areas or patient groups, e.g. DBT-A, DBT-PTSD, DBT-ED, DBT-RO, DBT-ACES, DBT-Family Interventions. Among these encouraging developments is the adaptation of DBT to meet the specific needs of people with cognitive challenges like disorders of intellectual development.
This large group of patients, who according to the ICD have a significantly higher risk of mental illness compared to the general population, often encounters structural and content-related barriers in mental health care and consequently experiences exclusion. Due to the frequent difficulties faced by people with cognitive challenges, the principles of DBT prove to be very helpful; skills can be formulated in simple language, so that not only people with cognitive challenges benefit from them.
This presentation aims to provide an overview of:
1. The specific needs of people with disorders of intellectual development.
2. General characteristics of psychotherapy for people with disorders of intellectual development.
3. The use of DBT principles in working with people with disorders of intellectual development.
4. Formal adaptations of DBT for this group of patients.
5. Implementation options and experiences.
Following the presentation, there will be time to discuss specific questions with the participants.
