Description

This talk will focus on core principles and strategies involved in phone coaching in dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993, 2015). DBT is a comprehensive, cognitive-behavioural treatment program for people with complex mental health concerns characterized by emotion regulation difficulties. DBT consists of individual therapy, group skills training, between-session telephone consultation (often referred to as phone coaching), and a therapist consultation team. DBT is a learning-oriented approach whereby clients learn new behaviours and skills needed to build lives they experience as worth living. As new behaviours need to generalize to relevant situations and challenges, DBT includes phone coaching as a way to help clients implement skills in their everyday lives. In this talk, the speaker will discuss some core principles and strategies that can help clinicians implement phone coaching effectively.
